The Lutz/Lutes Family Scholarship
Awarded April 1st of Each Year
The Lutz/Lutes Family Scholarship was established by Claudia (Lutes) Tugwell in memory of her parents Allen and Esther Lutes. The scholarship, valued at $1,000.00 is awarded annually to a deserving high school student who will use said award toward the cost of the first year of his/her continuing education at an institution based in Atlantic Canada. Application is open to all Grade 12 students across Canada who will be attending a post-secondary institution located within any of the four Atlantic Provinces.
The recipient will have demonstrated high academic achievement and financial need. Completed applications received on or before April 1st of each calendar year will be considered. Decisions will be announced on or before May 1st of that same year.

Scholarship Application Checklist
Before you submit your application, be sure that you have included the following attachments:

Your estimated resources and expenses for the upcoming academic year;
- Tuition fees;

A transcript of your grade twelve mid-year marks;

Your academic program(s) of interest and a list of institutions applied to;

A copy of your letter of acceptance;

Two letters of reference – sources can be academic, personal (but not from family members), and business
You must also include two short essays detailing:
- A personal profile including

Your interests;
-
A family background;
-
Your financial means, (i.e., personal savings, summer job, etc.);
-
Clubs, groups, etc. that you are involved with;
-
Any volunteer work you have done;
-
Work experience;
- and future plans.
2) A short essay giving a history of the early German permanent settlers who arrived in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1766. Be sure to discuss Michael Lutz and his family as well as any prominent descendants. If you have a familial connection with Michael Lutz and his descendants, please feel free to share how you are connected. Keep in mind, however, that a familial connection with the Lutz/Lutes family is not required to be considered for this scholarship.

Congratulations to Brandon Grant of Sydney, Nova Scotia as the recipient of the 2023 Lutz/Lutes Family Scholarship! Brandon is graduating from Riverview High School this June and will be attending Cape Breton University in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry. Again, congratulations Brandon, and we wish you all the best in your very bright future!
2022
Congratulations to Lauren Cassidy from Moncton as the recipient of the 2022 Lutz/Lutes Family scholarship. Lauren is graduating from Moncton High and has been accepted at Saint Thomas University in the Bachelor of Arts program in Fine Arts and History. Eventually she wishes to take a Bachelor of Education to become a teacher. We all wish her well in her future endeavors!
2021
The Michael Lutz (1766) Descendants and the Lutz Mountain Heritage Foundation Inc. were pleased to be able to offer two scholarships for 2021. Congratulations to Minji Kim and Jacintha Shankle.
Minji attended Moncton High and was very involved in school activities and had exemplary academic achievement. She will be attending Dalhousie University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Science. Best of luck in all your future endeavors.
Jacintha attended the Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School and her teachers were impressed with her intelligence, dedication and motivation. She will be attending Acadia University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Sociology and the goal of becoming a Social Worker. We wish you all the best in your future studies.
2019
Andrew Johnson was the recipient of the 2019 Lutz/Lutes Family Scholarship. He is from Kentville, NS and is now on the Electronic Engineering Technician Program at Kingstec, the Nova Scotia Community College in Kentville.
2018
The recipient of the 2018 Lutz/Lutes Family scholarship was Sophia Oswald. Upon graduation, Sophia went on to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. This includes studies in Physical and Mathematical Sciences. She hopes to refine her degree to Bio-Medical Engineering and go on to her Master’s Degree.
